From a pushbike and basically nothing, Craig McWhinney and Kellie Orgill have spent the last 19 years turning a rundown Shady Creek block into one of Gippsland’s sharpest, most profitable family farms. 600 acres, 450 milking cows, brand-new rotary, lush pastures, thousands of trees planted, every waterway fenced — they’ve done it all with their own hands, a heap of help from their three kids, and one part-time milker.
Right now they’re in the fight of their lives: three massive 200+ MW battery storage projects (hundreds of shipping-container-sized units) are proposed within a 4 km radius — one of them just 30 meters from their boundary fence. Prime, high-rainfall, food-producing land could be lost forever to industrial energy infrastructure.
Craig’s mantra? “Job’s right.”
Kellie’s small joy? Watching the kids play sport and getting off the farm for a few hours when she can.
Craig’s? Sliding warm gloves off the hot-water pipe on a frosty morning and slipping his hands in.
Their message to every Gippsland farmer turning these pages: “Job’s right. Keep doing the next right thing. Protect the dirt that feeds us — because once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.”
