Passionate Family Affair at Stormview Jerseys
At Stormview Jerseys in Labertouche, West Gippsland, Peter and Fran Langley, along with their three boys – Matt, Jack, and Corey – have built more than just a dairy farm; they’ve created a legacy of resilience, hard work, and family pride. Their journey reflects the highs and lows of dairy farming, with Peter and Fran both finding outlets to support their mental wellness amid the demands of farm life.
Peter has a deep love for farming, and he enjoys its challenges. However, he admits that the pressures of debt and the demands of running a farm mean he rarely finds time for himself. When he does, he enjoys fishing, a rare chance to unwind and recharge. Fran, on the other hand, finds solace in her ponies. While the rest of the family may not share her passion, focusing on her Welsh Mountain Pony Stud offers Fran a much-needed mental break from farm responsibilities.
In 2016, the family took a big risk by purchasing 200 acres in Labertouche amidst the dairy crisis, leaving Peter’s parents and brother to continue the family’s original dairy farm, in Nar Nar Goon North. The original farm, of 180 acres, was purchased around 1960 by Peter’s father and grandfather. As a family they purchased more land to grow their business. Starting their own farm in Labertouche, with just 80 cows, halving the Nar Nar Goon North herd. Peter and Fran worked tirelessly to build Stormview Jerseys, overcoming financial pressures and physical demands. They have since expanded to 490 acres, this year, buying their lease block, and very recently upgrading their dairy shed to a 28-unit swingover system to accommodate their growing herd of 310 cows.
This hard work hasn’t come without sacrifices. Peter acknowledges that the weight of debt is what drives him out of bed each day, pushing him to keep moving forward. Despite these challenges, Peter and Fran have raised three resilient sons, two of which share their passion for farming. Jack, who now oversees the breeding program, and Corey, who works on the farm part-time, are both heavily involved in the day-to-day operations, carrying forward their parents’ commitment and vision. Matt’s works in the sports industry, following his passion.
The name “Stormview” reflects Fran’s connection to her ponies, a symbol of her determination and dedication to finding balance in her life. Through their hard work and unwavering commitment to each other, the Langleys have created a family legacy, demonstrating the strength, support, and pride that come with being part of a dairy farming family.
