Gippsland Jersey Pure Golden Ghee - what is it and how do I use it?

by Gippsland Jersey

Ghee

We are absolute butter lovers here at Gippsland Jersey and anyone who has tried our butter will testify to it’s rich, golden and delicious flavour! The natural next step for us was to create something that takes it a step further so you can enjoy the incredible richness and flavour of butter in your cooking. Regular butter reaches a burning point very quickly and will burn easily at 170 degrees. Ghee has a much higher burning point at 240 degrees.

Our Ghee is handmade locally from our own cultured butter by Chef Raj of Raj’s Kitchen in Drouin. Raj uses a traditional process of slow cooking our cultured butter, carefully removing milk solids and lactose, resulting in this super pure golden ghee with incredible flavour. It has a long shelf life - up to a year (if you don't eat it before then!). Because it's cooked low and slow it retains a lot of its nutrients like Vitamin E, Vitamin A, antioxidants and other organic compounds, which are often lost at higher cooking temperatures.

Because Ghee is clarified, it is casein free and very low in lactose, which means it is often a great option for those with lactose intolerances. Ghee is shelf stable and does not require refrigeration, keep in a cool dry place.

Ghee has been used in India for thousands of years in cooking and medicine - it has wonderful anti-inflammatory and digestive attributes. Cooking your spices in Ghee also helps to protect their integrity and nutritional benefits in the cooking process. We love it in our nightly turmeric latte! Ghee is also very popular in a Keto diet and used in bulletproof coffee.

Ghee can be used in place of oils, baking, sautéing and cooking. You can also melt it over a snack, pour it over popcorn or drizzle over your vegetables. Ghee is also fabulous for skin and hair, it can be used to soothe burns, skin irritation and as a moisturiser. Try mixing it with warm water for a soothing facial mask!

Our Pure Golden Ghee comes in both Spiced and Plain varieties. Our Spiced Ghee has a subtle blend of indian spices with a medium heat on the palate. Use anywhere you want to add a little spice! You can buy them both here
